What Is Gingival Sculpting?
While this treatment is largely used for cosmetic purposes, there are some patients who require it for oral health reasons. Gingival sculpting helps patients who have “gummy smiles” or an uneven gum line. This often results in teeth that appear to be too small in comparison to the gum tissue.
During the gingival sculpting procedure, you will be administered a local anesthetic. This is needed to numb the gum tissue. Once you are sufficiently numbed, our dentists will use a precision laser to trim your gums to the desired length.
You don’t have to worry about bleeding or a need for stitches. You are likely to feel some minor discomfort, but this will soon subside.
Following Treatment
Most gingival sculpting can be performed in a single visit. After treatment is complete, you will need to allow a day for healing. Prescription medication may be prescribed to help control any pain or discomfort.
You may also be directed to limit your diet until your gums have successfully healed. As such, you may need to follow a strict diet of liquids or soft foods just until you are completely healed. It is typically best to limit physical activity, as well.
