How Are Wisdom Teeth Extracted?

When you come in for your wisdom tooth extraction, our dentists begin by administering sedation, either oral or IV. Since anesthesia will be active, you won’t feel anything during the procedure.

Most wisdom tooth extractions take about 45 minutes to complete. Once the medication takes effect, our dentists will use special dental instruments to safely remove the affected tooth.

Following the extraction, your gums will be stitched up where the procedure took place. After a few days, these stitches will dissolve on their own. As such, you don’t have to worry about coming back in to have stitches taken out.

You will need to have someone with you when you come in for wisdom tooth extractions, as you will not be able to drive yourself home.

Following Treatment

Gauze is often used to keep bleeding to a minimum. You will need to change this every so often with fresh gauze. You are likely to feel groggy following your procedure, and you should expect some varying discomfort.

You may be prescribed pain medication to help control this discomfort. Ice packs are strongly advised, as well, as this helps to reduce swelling and pain.

It is important to follow all directions given by the dentists to ensure that you heal quickly. For the first 24 hours, you shouldn’t brush or floss your teeth. It is best just to take it easy and let your body relax as best you can. With proper care, your gums will heal, and you will be able to resume your normal diet.
